THE top three teams in A-section, Old Xaverians, De La Salle and St Bede's Mentone, entrenched themselves further with victories at the weekend. But the slippery nature of the final position in the top four was again apparent when Old Scotch leaped over University Blues into fourth position by thrashing Old Essendon at Elsternwick Park while the students lost a close tussle at home against Xavs.Scotch's Scott Sherwen, the son of 1980s Cardinals champion Peter Sherwen (who's now Alastair Clarkson's magnet man on the Hawthorn match committee), was best afield in a match in which he played all over the ground. James Byrne, the former Geelong VFL premiership captain who missed the first half of the season through injury, showed signs of returning to form for the Cardinals.Uni Blues are a game behind Scotch after losing to Xavs by 14 points in a performance that suggests they're not far off. Eighth-placed Marcellin's victory over the disappointing Old Brighton at Bulleen put a two-game gap between it and fellow relegation prospects Old Essendon and Old Ivanhoe.De La Salle made Old Ivanhoe's job tougher yesterday when it won their clash at Elsternwick Park. The Hoers finished well but De La Salle, who last week lost to Old Xavs in their top-of-the-table clash at Waverley Oval, had the match in hand from the first quarter. -- PAUL DAFFEY
