SHORT and sweet. That was the auction for 9 Hartington Street in Elsternwick, a double-fronted Victorian that sold for $1.5 million.The renovated four-bedroom house opened at $1.3 million and flew past its $1.4 million reserve to a sale in just five bids."Two bidders went for it very quickly in $20,000 and $80,000 increments. We had up to five genuine buyers in the crowd but it just went beyond them," said Biggin & Scott agent Angelos Stefanis. The property had been quoted at $1.3 million-plus.The Real Estate Institute of Victoria reports that the median house price for Elsternwick rose 13.9 per cent to $1,087,500 in the September quarter, although this figure is based on fewer than 30 transactions. Melbourne's median house price rose 6.7 per cent to $480,000 over the same period.
